"In the original screenplay of “Charlie X” Uhura was a talented mimic, who amused her colleagues with miming fellow officers. This was altered to suit Nichelle Nichols’ singing abilities."

Can we please have this in the reboot canon? It totally makes sense that Starfleet’s best linguist who speaks 83% of the official Federation languages would be really good at mimicry. Like, instead of devoting far too much time to empathizing with whitewashed genocidal dictators, could the next movie dedicate that time to Uhura mimicking members of Enterprise’s crew? Or even the Enterprise itself? Give me Nyota Uhura imitating a turbolift or a hailing frequency or a hypospray.

And maybe everyone would assume that her imitations put a strain on her relationship with Spock, because super srs Vulcans and joking do not mix? And Spock has to explain that mimicry is the one form of humor acceptable to Vulcans because “in replicating so flawlessly the voice of another, the mimic exposes the inherent existential tension in the unitary Federation subject, revealing individuality to be nothing more than a charade.”

And everyone just nods and turns back to Uhura. “DO THE SWISHY DOOR SOUND AGAIN!”

Just put me back in London. I need to get to know the place again, breathe it in – feel every quiver of its beating heart.

I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look or the words, which laid the foundation. It is too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun.
